A: My take on McLuhan is sympathetic, but not
uncritical. I think that McLuhan will always be not
to everyone’s taste. For example, McLuhan has
always appealed more to artists and to those who
had to go out, wanting to do media research and
understand things and needed some kind of
inspiring framework or point of departure. He has
never been in favor with the grim or the politically
correct. My advice, in fact, to the reader is to
forget the critics and go back and read McLuhan
and compare him to what you find in the world.
The reason I say this is because it is now widely
agreed that McLuhan’s critics are hopelessly
contradictory. You put one beside the other and
